Birdie Salad
by Margaret Madison, NCS Online Editor
 | 1 cup fresh greens* |
 | 1/8 cup shredded carrots |
 | 1/8 cup Mann's shredded broccoli slaw |
 | 1/2 cup cooked, warm whole wheat pasta or brown rice |
* - I use an organic variety, well-washed, including the
following greens: dandelion, red and green chard, red and green
romaine, arugula, frisee, mizuna, baby spinach.
Spread the above ingredients out on a platter. For extra nutrition
and to maintain variety, top the salad with one or two of the ingredients
listed below.
 | Spoonful of warm, cooked beans** |
 | Spoonful of warm, cooked peas or mixed veggies (fresh or frozen, never
canned) |
 | Small handful of unsweetened toasted oat cereal |
 | Pieces of well washed strawberries, grapes, apple and orange - cut
into cockatiel-sized pieces. |
 | Green Pepper (occasionally I also give them the seed ball) |
 | Slice of Brownberry 12-grain bread, fresh or toasted, cut into small
crouton like cubes. |
 | A small scoop of their favorite cockatiel seed mix |
** - I use the bean variety packaged for 16 bean soup,
only I do not make the broth, I only cook up the beans

Carrot-Apple Salad
by Trudy
T. Rosenthal, RN, PhD, Nutrition Consultant
 | 1 medium size apple |
 | 2 medium size carrots |
 | 1 bunch carrot tops |
 | 1 cup sunflower seed (or mixed seeds) |
Wash apple, carrots and carrot tops very carefully to remove any
insecticides which might be on fresh fruit and vegetables. Chop carrots
and carrot tops in food processor; then chop apple. Do not chop
apple with carrots because carrots take longer and the apple will become
very mushy.
Blend diced apple, carrot and carrot tops well and add your seeds,
and stir well.
This recipe provides a yellow and green vegetable with fruit. By adding
sunflower seeds to the mixture the birds who do not like vegetable/fruit
mixtures will "forget" what they are eating as they consume their seeds.
Grapes or pears may be substituted for the apple.
This recipe will provide 30 servings at 1 Tablespoon of the mixture per bird.
